Mastery of woodwork starts with Kiln drying. As a tree, the trunk works to move water from roots to branch, and when the tree dies or is cut down, moisture is trapped in the interior. Water will move through the wood towards the surface until equilibrium with the environment is reached. Cupping, warping, and cracking often results from this process, and ensuring that this happens before the wood is worked is vital to function, form, and beauty. Our wood is dried to an 8% moisture content.

Once dry, the wood is planed, leveled, and cut to shape.

Rough edges are rounded, and surfaces are sanded to suit.

After leveling, crack lines are joined with bowties, which is a traditional form of stabilizing against wood grain movement. In this case, the voids are then filled with epoxy.

Here we mocked up the height to create a perfect waterfall effect where the grain of the wood falls over the 90 degree angle to the vertical edge.
